Beowulf reveals several values considered highly desirable in Anglo-Saxon society. Bravery, Honesty, Courage, War, Plundering, Strength and victory were highly regarded in Anglo-Saxon society. In Beowulf specifically all the men are concerned with victory over defeat. Beowulf himself is overly confident in his strength and demonstrates courage and bravery in his battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the Dragon. He travels to the land of the Danes just to prove that he can save the Danes from Grendel. Also at the end of the poem he has his last and final battle with the dragon. Even though the consequence of his battle is his own death he defeats the dragon. The epic of Beowulf reveals the universal themes of bravery, loyalty, betrayal and friendship. Beowulf again demonstrates his bravery in several of his battles. Loyalty is demonstrated when in Beowulf’s final battle he is abandoned by all of his men except one Wiglaf. This is also an example of and demonstrates friendship.
